Days 39, 40, & 41
Day 39
We from Kayenta, AZ to Tuba City, AZ, a total of 75 miles. Not a very eventful day. We stayed at a KOA/hotel with tent space for fifteen bucks. It was worth it, for sure. We met some Israeli guys who were very excitable, but really, not much else worth mentioning.
Day 40
We rode from Tuba City, AZ to the Grand Canyon. The first twenty miles were really awesome, but the ascent (3000 feet over 27 miles) to the park was brutal. We decided to take it easy, camped not far into the park, and started drinking beers immediately. At the snack bar they had incredible vegan chili, and everyone was super nice to us, especially Arnie, the cook. He hooked us up repeatedly. We bumped into another cyclist, Brian, from Massachusetts, who is heading east after riding across the northern edge of america to Seattle, and down the Pacific coast. He shared our campsite for the night, and offered insight into our next few days into the real desert. Another guy, Eddy from Michigan, hung out with us awhile and we had a long conversation. He was a really cool guy, and before he left he gave us a sixer of Monster energy drinks. Hell yes.
Day 41
We rode from the Canyon to Williams, AZ. Along the way we met this cat from Japan who has been touring America since April. I won’t even try to spell his name. Dude’s doing ALASKA to LA…super-rad. We’re riding with him for one more day… Tomorrow evening we split off and start night-riding to avoid the heat of the day. So yea, that’s about it for the moment. My phone’s gonna die so I’m hitting the sack.
